Sheffield Makes Music

Sheffield turns up the volume for the BBC Music Day celebrations with an amazing 22 planned events across the city.
Sheffield Makes Music is part of the BBC’s national event on Friday, 3 June 2016 which will give the city the chance to show off its music heritage with acts to suit all ages and tastes. Famous voices that have put the Sheffield on the international music map are helping support the event, taking place in a number of locations across the city centre.
CBBC will take to the stage at the Peace Gardens in the daytime to entertain the city’s younger residents and there will be an appearance from Trae Mondo, an 11-year- old rapper who has already caught the attention of Dizzee Rascal.

City Hall Steps
Right after the town hall balcony rendition, we head back up to the City Hall Steps where Crimes Against Taste perform once again as day turns into evening at another iconic venue in the city.

CBBC with Barney Baloney the Magician, Barry Phillips Karaoke, Fantastic Faces Face Painting, Under the Stars & Trae Mondo live music, Presenter Karim & Woof the dog interacting with crowd, stage games. Trae Mondo – a collective of 11 years old, singing urban music. The Stars Band are a collective from the Under the Stars project who nurture budding musicians whom have disabilities.

Town Hall Balcony
When the bells toll at 5.15pm an unexpected operatto will recite Nessun Dorma from the balcony of the Town Hall. Followed by CBBC Presenter Karim and Woof who have a few surprises

5.25pm – 5.35pm Gareth Lloyd interaction with CBBC presenter Karim & Woof the dog. Woof is a puppet.
We have an exciting fusion of jazz, latin, blues and soul together with contemporary hits and pop classics. Take your pick!

Frog & Parrot Division St
Take a wander down buzzing Division St, one of the main arteries of the city centre. Check out the Frog & Parrot’s windows for some wicked vibes from these local artists.

Wander up to John Lewis this morning and catch the beautifully emotive vocals of the amazing Gina Walters, who also performs in the Andrews Sisters inspired The Bobby Pins.

Two different eras of legendary Sheffield music do battle over the two headphone channels. Pick up a pair of headphones as you wander around the fruit and veg, and choose between the 2 dj’s offering, pre and post 1990’s Sheffield tunes. Let the battle commence! With DJ’s Geoff T, Big Chris Page, Joel Phillips and Craig Holmes.

The Star Flyer on Fargate
Next to the Town Hall you’ll find a humongous fairground attraction. Listen a little closer and you will notice that today they are only playing Sheffield artists’ music old and new. 19. Roaming BBC Van Band of the Day. Raucous two piece Hot Soles are on house band duties for the day, providing ‘aggressive soul vibes’ The duo will be out and about with the BBC in their van boot (oh err) as the Band of the Day. See the van, see the band, hear the music!
Expect a famous voice over the tannoy system this morning and Choirs & Orchestras in the afternoon! Local music fans, musicians and gig goers have contributed hundreds of their favourite music memories and experiences – these will be displayed in the station throughout the day!

Snap is an active event that uses current popular youth culture to engage with young people. The project provides entertainment youth currently engage with while training youth at the same time and offering other skill workshops such as media, languages and more.

Mapping Creativity is a 3D projector mapping art installation and music event in Hope Works Sheffield curated by Lo Shea and part of the 2016 Year Of Making. It’s purpose is to showcase and celebrate the wealth and diversity of talent we have in Sheffield in art, design and music and to do it in a non standard format, in real time in a clubbing environment. We shall dance to the sound of Sheffield musical artists while we watch the makings of our makers.
Music starts from midnight.
It’s the place to be this evening. A law unto itself with the spotlight on Sheffield unique Independent music scene curated by DJ Sophie Toes, an evening of live music and djs. Expect big queues….
