The next exhibition in Yorkshire Artspace’s ‘Ways of Making’ series is Portraits from the Market by portrait painter Andrew Hunt. This is another collaborative project with portrait photographer Chris Saunders – a recent one being a commission by the TV series Peaky Blinders to photograph and paint the characters for the on-set board room that featured in the programme.

‘Portraits from the Market’ will display a number of huge photo realistic paintings of selected faces alongside 50 photographs taken by Chris of people who visited or work at the Moor Market. During the exhibition period 17 May – 24 June, the Persistence Works Gallery will become Andrew’s studio, so visitors will be able to watch Andrew complete the portraits. This will also provide an insight into an artist’s methods and techniques – something we rarely have the opportunity to share and experience.

Even in their part complete form these portraits are already uncannily realistic and mesmerizing, in how they capture the expression and character of each subject.

The project began last summer when Andy and Chris occupied one of the market stalls for a day. Rather than advertising ahead they wanted to record stallholders and visitors who were there because they were shopping. They found people who were asked to sit for a photograph enthusiastic and accommodating. Consequently they were able to secure a range pictures that included a great mix of people.

Andrew says: “Since the Market moved to the Moor, I’ve been a regular visitor and it has become a constant source of inspiration for the narrative of my figurative work. I want this exhibition to represent my local Sheffield community and as a consequence say something about our society in modern Britain.”

Showing these works together celebrates this busy marketplace and the diverse community of our city.
